Science Competitions
Science Olympiad, Regeneron ISEF, Regeneron STS, MATHCOUNTS, AMC/AIME/USA(J)MO, Science Fair, Engineering Design competitions, and similar events are taken seriously by selective colleges — especially for STEM applicants. In your description, specify your event or category, your team's record or placement, and any individual honors. In the honors section, list any placement above the regional level.
Research Experience
Research is the highest-signal STEM activity. As covered in our separate guide, your description should specify your research question, methodology, and any outcome — not just the name of the program or institution. "Investigated effect of microplastics on Daphnia behavior using controlled exposure assays; presented at regional ISEF" is far more informative than "Research internship at university lab."
Coding and Technology Projects
If you've built apps, developed software, contributed to open-source projects, or created tools with real users, describe this with specifics: language/framework, user count, problem solved, or GitHub activity. These projects demonstrate applied technical capability that abstract test scores cannot.
Math Activities
MATHCOUNTS, AMC 8/10/12, AIME, USAMO/JMO, math circles, and math olympiad preparation programs are all worth listing. Include your highest score or level reached. Math olympiad achievement — particularly USAMO or USAJMO qualification — is one of the strongest possible STEM signals in an application.
