Medical school admissions operates on a rolling basis, which means the timing of your application is not just administrative — it directly affects your chances. Two equally qualified applicants can have very different outcomes based entirely on whether one submitted in June and the other in October.
Pre-Application Year (Year 3 of College, Typically)
Summer before application year: Take the MCAT. Most students target May–June so scores arrive before AMCAS submission. If you are retaking, June–July is the latest that allows August score receipt. Begin drafting your personal statement. Finalize your school list using MSAR data.
September–December: Request letters of recommendation — give recommenders 6–8 weeks minimum. Begin drafting secondary essays for likely schools using preview prompts from prior cycles (most schools reuse prompts). Finalize your AMCAS activities list.
Application Year Timeline
May: AMCAS opens for data entry. You cannot yet submit, but complete as much as possible. Finalize your personal statement.
Late May / Early June: AMCAS opens for submission. Submit immediately — the system verifies applications for several weeks before transmitting to schools, so June submission often means July transmission. This is your most important timing decision.
June–July: Secondary invitations begin arriving. Most schools send secondaries to everyone; some pre-screen by GPA/MCAT. Respond to secondaries within 2 weeks — applications left sitting signal low interest.
August–September: First interview invitations go out to early applicants. Schools interview on a first-come, first-served basis from their qualified pool. Early submission means early interviews, which means earlier decisions.
October–February: Peak interview season. Prepare for MMI (Multiple Mini Interview) format, used by most medical schools, as well as traditional panel and hybrid formats. Send post-interview thank-you notes within 48 hours.
October 15: MD Early Decision (ED) programs release decisions. If accepted ED, withdraw other applications.
March 15 (Second Look Season): Schools begin releasing regular acceptances. Traffic light system: accept (hold for 30 days), waitlist, or reject.
April 15: Last day to hold multiple acceptances without penalty (National Decision Deadline for MD programs). You must commit to one school by this date.
March–June: Waitlist movement. Submit a Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI) to waitlisted schools within 2–4 weeks of notification. Update schools with any significant new achievements.
DO Program Timeline (AACOMAS)
DO programs use AACOMAS, which opens in May and accepts submissions slightly later than AMCAS. The same early-is-better principle applies. DO interviews tend to run slightly later in the fall and extend further into spring.
